    “Mirador del rio”

El Mirador del Río is a lookout located 500 meters on a cliff. It offers a spectacular panoramic view of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago.

It was first inaugurated in the 70s and it is one of the most representative architectural works of César Manrique about the integration of the hand of man in the natural environment, a harmonious formula that brings together art and nature.

Its access is guarded by a sculpture by Manrique that represents a bird and a fish. They are a metaphor for water and air, the elements with the greatest presence in the environment.

After going through an intriguing entrance, we will find two impressive, vaulted windows. They are the eyes of the “Mirador”, through which Manrique conceived an extraordinary panoramic view.

Through it you can see the slopes of the cliff “Risco de Famara”, and then we see “El Río”, so-called river: a narrow strip of sea that gives its name to the Mirador and that separates Lanzarote from La Graciosa, the eighth Canary Island.

Beyond, we can see Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza, which together with Roque del Este, form the Chinijo Archipelago, a small group of elements unique in the world for its landscapes of volcanic origin and its rich marine reserve, currently the largest in Europe.

    What to wear

During the colder months from October to May, we recommend you wear warm clothes, since the Mirador del Río is located on top of the cliff “Risco de Famara” where it is rather windy and it might feel like it is a bit colder.

We recommend taking photos on the upper terrace or on the balcony from which you can see the group of islands that make up the Chinijo Archipelago. Also take photos at the sculpture by César Manrique of the fish and the bird in front of the stone façade that  identifies the place itself, or under the sculpture-iron lamp.
