    “Cave of the greens”

The Cueva de los Verdes is a unique formation of landscape and volcanic characteristics of an extraordinary value. It is located in the northern area of the island, and integrated in the vast volcanic landscape of the Malpaís de la Corona. It is one of the wonders hidden in the bowels of Lanzarote, blessed with a mysterious and special mythological character.

The cave is almost 8 kilometers long, it is formed by a complex of tunnels and recesses with fascinating vaults and interior lagoons. The section that can be seen is made up of one kilometer of superimposed galleries with vertical interconnection. Inside they can be up to fifty meters high and  fifteen meters wide.

As in the case of Jameos del Agua, the Cueva de los Verdes is a part of the volcanic tube resulting from the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona, approximately 4000 years ago. The underwater part of this tube is known as the Atlantis Tunnel, one of the most important volcanic tunnels in the world.

It used to be a refuge for the population against the Barbary pirates of North Africa during the 16th and 17th centuries, It is said that the Cueva de los Verdes is called after the surname of a family that used the cave and kept their cattle in the surroundings.

In the 1960s, the Cabildo de Lanzarote entrusted the adaptation of the cave to Jesús Soto, who would later become a collaborator of César Manrique. The cave was adapted and it has become one of the most desired attractions for travelers, scholars and scientists from all over the world who are fascinated by this unique formation.

Respecting the natural environment, the hand of man has just prepared the path that leads us through the cave and has set the ambient light and sound, which are perfectly camouflaged and create an atmosphere of strange and poetic beauty.
